In NGAF (Next-Generation Application Firewall), Layer 3 interfaces operate at the network layer (IP), handling routing between different subnets and managing IP-based traffic, typically used for inter-network communication. Layer 2 interfaces work at the data link layer (Ethernet), functioning as a bridge to forward traffic within the same subnet, without modifying IP addresses. Layer 2 is often used for transparent mode or to connect devices in the same network, while Layer 3 is used for routing between different networks.

HiHi,

This depends on your deployment type for Layer 2 or Layer 3 in different conditions. For example, use Layer 2 for Transparent/Bridge Mode and Layer 3 for Routed Mode.
Please find the attached file for NSF Deployment information for your reference.

Layer 2 can be used as a virtual switchport like a VLAN, simply like a trunking system on a standard switch. while layer 3 is used as a direct switchport that is directly connected to routing access. you can input ip address directly to layer 3.
