It's really a good question.
For common WAN optimization, it borns in MPLS age, MPLS is very expensive and small bandwidth
Users need some methods to reduce MPLS costs and improve link throughput, then WAN optimization come,
WANO support de-duplication and compression to reduce traffic enhance link throughput.
Typical product: Riverbed Steelhead series. SilverPeak NX series
With internet rapid growth, internet link become more and more stable and the price is cheap,
Users are doing digital transformation, they need more bandwidth and some service toward to cloud,
so MPLS only network is not suitable for business, users need to use hybrid WAN, MPLS for critical apps, Internet for cloud or other business, SD-WAN coming.
SD-WAN not only support hybrid WAN path selection, also have Zero touch deployment to simplify deployment and unified management and operation features.
Typical product: Riverbed Steelconnect series.  Silverpeak Edgeconnect

For Sangfor WANO integrates both optimization features and common SD-WAN features.
Sangfor WANO = Riverbed Steelhead + Riverbed Steelconnect.
In 2008, Sangfor WANO became a component of Sangfor SD-WAN. One product have WAN optimization solution and SD-WAN solution.
Is this answer helpful?

Wan Optimization reduces the amount of bits that need to go over the pipe (compression, caching etc), where as SD-WAN is making the pipe bigger (such as overlay tunnels like Broadband Bonding). So in that sense they solve similar pain points from different approaches and they work well together. We deployed Riverbed (Wan Opt) and Mushroom Networks (SD-WAN) in a one-legged architecture and it works like a charm.

the difference is the BBC. If the end user only have wano in HO and Branches, it only gets optimization, compression, VPN. If they have BBC in HO, it can support zero touch deployment, link binding and centralization of management for all security products like NGAF, WANO, IAM and aBos..

SD-WAN and WAN Optimization
These two terms get thrown around a lot in IT blogs, many of which declare that SD-WAN is the newest settlement on the WAN optimization frontier.

The thing is, this may be a little over simplistic.

WAN optimization and SD-WAN are more like two mates that play on the same team than they are legend and successor. The two can work wonders alone or, possible even better, together, but it is not correct to think of an SD-WAN solution as a replacement for WAN optimization.

Let’s take a look at each to understand their similarities and differences.
