[Question]

HCI (5.2 Version) > Upgrade
Is that any impact on HCI 5.2 VM backup if upgraded to HCI 5.3 and above?
[Answer]

HCI versions 5.2 and below use snapshot-based backup technology, while HCI versions 5.3 and above use image-based backup technologies. After upgrading from HCI 5.2 to HCI 5.3 or a later version, all existing VM backups will be removed after the first backup is executed using the new image-based backup method.

Yes, there is an impact. Backup VMs on HCI 5.3 can be 3 minutes to boot up. Achieving VM restoration within 15 minutes.

Upgrading from HCI 5.2 to 5.3 (or higher) will not impact VM backups.

It can certainly have some impact on VM backups, depending on how the upgrade process is performed and the new features introduced in the new version.

The clusters should have matching specifications and be on the same version as much as possible.
