Will there be any impact to if we add new node directly to production without shutdown the VM

Dear all i want to add an additional node to an existing production HCI and expand the disk, if we do this on running production would there be any impact like vm stop working or corrupt or missing datastore?

and when expand the disk does the procedure will format the existing clustered virtual datastore or only the new introduced disk will be formatted and join the virtual datastore?

Hi, here's the answers to your questions.

1. if we do this on running production would there be any impact like vm stop working or corrupt or missing datastore?
Nope. it won't affect the VM functionality or missing datastore. You can use Sangfor aDeploy, a tool to pre-check the nodes condition wheter is it okay to proceed with node addition and disk expansion.

2. and when expand the disk does the procedure will format the existing clustered virtual datastore or only the new introduced disk will be formatted and join the virtual datastore?
Exisitng data will not be formatted, just the new added disk will be formatted, join the datastore and exisitng data will be copied to those disks. I've done this acitivty multiple times and never faced loss of data.
Is this answer helpful?

Hi, Adding a new node to production without shutting down VMs is typically safe if the system supports hot-scaling, the new node is configured correctly (network, storage, and cluster settings), and the environment is stable. However, always back up critical VMs, monitor closely, and have a rollback plan ready.
